Monterey County Office of Education provides leadership to 25 pubic school districts throughout the county.  More than half of the student population in Monterey County speaks a language other than English at home, with more than 50 languages represented. 

Schools support the language development of students in a variety of instructional settings, including Bilingual programs and Structured English Immersion.  Several schools have two-way immersion programs that teach Spanish language and literacy to both English and Spanish-speaking students.  The MCOE "Maestra" program establishes a support system for bilingual and bicultural college students who wish to enter the teaching profession.
